You only get one chance to join the old man’s sect. You can join other sects once you’ve completed the old man’s sect quest line.
This is not true for the other way round. You can’t join any other sect only to come back to the old man.
Can I Leave Before Ending?
You are allowed to leave before eliminating the Nine Province Sect. So you can’t complete the entire quest line.
