Track, Inspect and avoid if too dangerous. In borderline cases activate the Rod of Recall, wait 30 turns and then engage, If it goes pear-shaped you only have to survive 10 turns.
Use inspect frequently in combat (for example, against a psionicist you need to know when its shields go down because the resulting force shield is quite strong).
Skeleton is a powerful race. It gets nice attribute bonuses and its bone shield is excellent defence.
Note: Iirc fearscape and dreamscape dispels recall, but enemies don’t use dreamscape and ones that use fearscape generally don’t kill you.
